Being a good reader is critical if a student is going to be successful in school. To help ensure that students become successful readers, the 2019 Nevada Legislature passed Assembly Bill 289 (AB289). The purpose of this law is to equip Nevada's elementary students with a strong reading foundation. The legislation also requires all elementary schools to provide services for those students who have been identified as reading below grade level.
Parents are notified and Intensive Instruction Plans are created for those students identified as needing extra supports. These students are then given additional intensive reading instruction in the form of small groups.
Additionally, students are given online accounts for reading programs funded by EKA that can be accessed by most devices both at school and home. All parents/guardians of our Read By Grade 3 students are invited to attend Breakfast with Books in October and a family literacy event with their students in February to learn reading games and strategies to use at home.
